Solotech partners with L-Acoustics to offer L-ISA training

Montreal, February 7, 2020 – Three L-Acoustics trainers – Frédéric Blanc-Garin, Marcus Ross and André Pichette – recently came to Solotech’s Montreal offices to offer an intensive three-day training on L-ISA Immersive Hyperreal Sound technology. For two additional days, clients, consultants and industry professionals had the opportunity to try the ecosystem, experience what many are calling the “sound of the future,” and consider the new technology with their specific needs in mind.

“Immersive audio is playing an increasingly important role in our various markets. It was therefore with great interest that we held a week-long training session for our specialized technicians and offered personalized demonstrations to several industry players,” said François “Frankie” Desjardins, Vice-President, Research & Development of Solotech.

Truly revolutionary, L-ISA technology enables artists to create new multidimensional sound experiences in productions that use live or recorded material. This ecosystem heightens emotions by giving listeners the impression they’re “inside the music”.

Already used in more than 7,000 performances worldwide, L-ISA has been adopted by several renowned artists, including Childish Gambino, Bon Iver and Mark Knopfler, whose equipment was supplied by SSE Audio, a Solotech company. It is permanently installed in a number of experiential venues and theatres, including ARTECHOUSE, SPYSCAPE museum, and the Park Theater in Las Vegas for Lady Gaga’s and Aerosmith’s residencies, in which Solotech participated.

“L-ISA opens up a whole new creative spectrum for sound designers. It gives them the opportunity to create totally natural environments where sound is localized to its source or, if they prefer, to free their imaginations to immerse the listener in any kind of atmosphere they wish,” explained Frédéric Blanc-Garin, L-ISA Labs Engineer.

From left to right : Frédéric Blanc-Garin, Patrice Lavoie, André Pichette

“This partnership between Solotech and L-Acoustics was a first in Montreal,” says Patrice Lavoie, Audio Technical Advisor at Solotech. “It helped make the technology accessible to all, not only to spectators, but to operators as well. The participants who had the opportunity to test the system in real conditions and benefit from the knowledge of the experts on site, were all completely satisfied.”

Solotech extends a warm thank you to L-Acoustics for travelling across the country to share its expertise with us in Montreal.

Presented by Timeless Communications, publishers of PLSN and FOH magazines, the prestigious Parnelli Awards honor the very best of entertainment technology in the live event and concert touring industry. Solotech is proud to count itself among those honored by the Parnelli Awards again this year. This marks the fourth Parnelli Award won by Solotech in recent years. They have previously been recognized as Best Video Production Company and Best Sound Company of the year. In addition, Solotech Account Executive, Paul Becher won the Video Director of the Year Parnelli Award for his role on Paul McCartney’s Freshen Up Tour.

In attendance was Martin Tremblay, CEO of Solotech, who commented on the recognition of Solotech and its team. “I was very pleased to be able to attend the Parnelli Awards and support our team in Live Productions, as well as the many Solotech clients that were nominated. We were all very happy to receive four nominations covering audio, lighting, video and rigging in recognition of the industry-leading work of our teams on so many of the year’s top tours and events, including P!nk, Michael Bublé, Hugh Jackman, and Lady Gaga,” he states. “We take a tremendous amount of pride as a company in the Live Production team and the support they provide to clients around the globe. They not only bring but set the highest level of customer service in this market segment. Like our immensely talented and creative clients, Solotech sees entertainment technology challenges not as obstacles but as opportunities to innovate. “We are very honored to have so many nominations this year and are truly proud of this win for our lighting support on P!nk’s Beautiful Trauma Tour. Being in the business for almost 40 years I’ve worked with so many great artists in the industry, but I can honestly say that Paul McCartney is on the top of that list. And although the award singled me out for this achievement, it would not have been possible without the help and hard work of so many people on Paul McCartney’s Freshen Up Tour—Production Manager Mark “Springo” Spring, Show Designer LeRoy Bennett, Tour Producer Barrie Marshall and their teams as well as my Video Engineer Christian LaVoie, Crew Chief Mike “Sinky” Sienkiewicz, and the rest of the video crew. Rammstein’s Stadium Tour takes Solotech and SSE Audio throughout Europe

Montreal, December 12, 2019 – Embarking on their first ever all-stadium tour in 2019 the multiplatinum-selling industrial metal German band Rammstein, renowned for their epic stage shows, wanted the production values of their Europe Stadium Tour to fill the massive venues. So, who did they rely upon when adding video into their stage design for the first time ever? Solotech. And who did they trust for arguably the most important production element of any Rammstein tour, the audio package? SSE Audio, a Solotech company.

Coordinating with Stefan Mehnert of Rammstein’s management and Production Director Nicolai Sabottka, as well as the production’s design teams, Solotech and SSE Audio provided the needed audio and video gear and services to solve the challenges of touring to the many different stadiums in multiple countries. Solotech’s Holger Schader, Senior Consultant, Concert Touring and Special Events for the Live Productions division oversaw the account for Solotech and SSE Audio.

Rammstein’s Stadium Sound

The sold-out Europe Stadium Tour supported the release of the band’s seventh album, which is the first Rammstein studio album in a decade. Eager to hear the new tracks live for the first-time concertgoers were certainly not disappointed by Rammstein’s stunning show and the power, range, and clarity from the audio package delivered from SSE Audio.

The tour’s audio spec, put together by Rammstein´s longtime FOH Engineer Olsen Involtini and Systems Engineer Andreas Vater, called for L-Acoustics speakers and Avid VENUE control. Having both worked with Rammstein for such a long time, they knew exactly what was needed to make the band sound great in every stadium fully immersing the audience in the music.

SSE Audio being a well-stocked L-Acoustics house was well positioned to handle the large package. Assisting Vater was SSE Audio Crew Chief Nick Pain, and Audio Technician Nils Knecht, who oversaw the L-Acoustics’ Soundvision system and system alignment.

Solotech and SSE Audio were able to address the logistical challenges of putting together the stadium-sized audio system by thoroughly testing it prior to sending it to the tour for their prep and rehearsals. The tour had a warehouse in Berlin that afforded everyone the luxury of testing everything together before rehearsals.

The control system for FOH supplied by SSE consisted of two Avid VENUE S6L systems including two S6L-32D control surfaces; two Avid VENUE E6L-192 Engine for S6L; two Waves SoundGrid Server Extreme; and two Avid VENUE Stage 64 stage boxes. For the monitor system SSE Audio provided two S6L systems with matching components, which was similar to the FOH setup.

To accommodate the different sized stadiums, the audio rig could be expanded. In the bigger cities Production used up to four delay towers, and up to eight positions for roof delays with 12 L-Acoustics’ K2s to get rid of unwanted reflections.

The audio package’s full L-Acoustics speaker system delivered by Solotech and SSE Audio was comprised of 140 L-Acoustics K1 large format WST® (Wavefront Sculpture Technology) line source elements; 128 L-Acoustics K2 full range WST® line source elements; 40 L-Acoustics K1-SB flyable high-power subwoofers; 68 L-Acoustics KS28 high-power subwoofers; 16 L-Acoustics ARCS II constant curvature WST® line source elements; and 16 L-Acoustics KARA WST® system modular line source elements.

The line array rig included some rigging challenges which SSE Audio helped solve at the request of the production to improve the load-ins and -outs.  Production wanted SSE Audio to keep the hoists for the main hangs on the floor. Technical consultant Jeremy Lloyd of Wonder Works and WIcreations, came up with a cage solution holding four hoists on the floor. Each hoist was capable of lifting 2.5 tons.

The rigging solution streamlined the audio load-in to four to six hours, depending on the production schedule and most of the load-outs took just two hours. SSE Audio sent out with the tour a crew of 10 technicians, led by Crew Chief Nick Pain.

“Quite frankly Rammstein was an amazing show and one of the best sounding stadium tours out this summer,” notes Schader.

Video Joins the Show

The production having decided to use video as part of the tour’s design, a video system consisting of a massive five-meter by nine-meter (16.4-feet by 29.52-feet) LED video screen, control, and camera package was specified by Designers Patrick Woodroffe and Roland Greil of Woodroffe Bassett Design. For this stadium tour the design team opted for a main screen, which was automated to go up and down on the massive center tower of the set.

Solotech provided 600 tiles of their proprietary nine-millimeter Solotech/Saco S9 LED modules, with Solotech/Saco Nano processing to create the centerpiece HD LED video screen, which was able to move 27-meters up and down the center scenic tower travelling at speeds of up to 0.4 meters per second. The automation was handled by entertainment engineering specialists WIcreations. Being a stadium tour, the screen was wind braced and guided along a set of vertical rails to allow an in-use wind loading of 15 meters-per-second.

To feed the content to the screen, the Solotech video crew deployed two disguise GX2 Pro media servers driven from MA Lighting grandMA2 light consoles along with a Barco ImagePRO Dual multi-format image processor/scaler. Solotech also supplied an extensive camera package, which consisted of two front of house cameras, two pit cameras, a camera track system, as well as a wireless remote camera in the package. The camera gear included four Grass Valley LDX86 HD studio cameras, two with Fujinon 99x lenses and two with Fujinon 23x lenses; Sachtler tripods; two Panasonic PTZ HD cameras and three Panasonic POV cameras; a Blackcam B10 robotic camera and track system; and a Marshall remote camera.

The video package also included a Solotech Flypack system centered around a Grass Valley Korona switching system, a Ross Video 32×32 SDI router along with Ross Video terminal gear and video control products from Brainstorm Electronics, DirectOut, and Tektronix. The Solotech video team on the tour consisted of three technicians led by Video Crew Chief, Steve Tomanek.

Though it was the first time the band took a video system on tour it likely won’t be the last time as it was well-received by audiences and the band itself.

Everybody on the Solotech and SSE Audio teams look forward to continuing to work with Rammstein on the wildly successful stadium tour. “With the size of this 2019 tour and the fact that it will be touring Europe again in 2020; they already have sold-out most dates for next spring and summer,” comments Schader. “I believe the production knew they wanted an international partner. Solotech and SSE Audio are able to offer that partnership globally. I feel we are ideally suited to really support the band’s vision and the production’s needs throughout the entire tour.”

“Hillsong always has sky-high aspirations and expectations to create a unique experience with their audience, regardless of whether it’s an intimate venue or a full-size major arena,” notes Moro. “Solotech always collaborates with them to succeed in delivering this engagement for each and every performance; ensuring that the design is realized to the intentions of the artists. It is always a wonderful collaboration between Solotech and Hillsong.”

One of the important features of the set is a huge trapezoidal-shaped screen, which Solotech provided, that overhangs both the stage and the pit, displaying content and live images of the performance above the audience. The songs’ lyrics are projected onto the back of the stage and onto the edges of the giant screen for the concert-goers to sing in unison. Two additional screens are also installed on each side of the stage.

“One of the biggest challenges for our teams was the projection-mapped roof over the band and audience, however the results were breathtaking. It creates a unique atmosphere for the fans; it’s really spectacular,” notes Jason McCarrick, Solotech’s Technical Specialist on the tour.

The well-received Hillsong United’s The People Tour is currently continuing in South America after a spectacular run through the United States and Canada.

Solotech: The Most Nominated Company of the 2020 Parnelli Awards

Los Angeles, November 11, 2019 – As a long-time sponsor and an award-winning participant of the Parnelli Awards — the highest accolade professionals in the live events industry can receive — Solotech is proud to have received nominations in seven categories, making it the most nominated company of the 2020 Parnelli Awards. The 19th edition of the Parnelli Awards will be held on January 17, 2020 in Anaheim, California.

A global leader in audiovisual and entertainment technology, Solotech is nominated for Lighting Company of the Year (P!nk), Sound Company of the Year (Michael Bublé), Video Production Company of the Year (Hugh Jackman) and Rigging Company of the Year (Lady Gaga Residency). Additionally, three Solotech employees have been nominated for individual Parnelli Awards: Marc Depratto for Monitor Mixer of the Year and Jonathan Trudeau for Audio System Tech of the Year, both for their work on the An Evening with Michael Bublé Tour, as well as Paul Becher for Video Director of the Year for his role on Paul McCartney’s Freshen Up Tour.

Presented by PLSN and FOH magazines, the Parnelli Awards are hailed as the “Oscars of the Live Event Industry”. Each year, they honor industry pioneers, innovators and creative teams for designing and realizing exceptional tours, for forward-thinking technical achievements and for the remarkable work of production professionals.

“I could not be prouder of what we’ve accomplished this year! Not only is it the first time in the history of Solotech that we have been considered for so many Parnelli awards, but we are also the most nominated company of 2020,” states Mickey Curbishley, President, Live Productions Division, USA at Solotech. “It is particularly satisfying to see the expertise and talent of Solotech’s people being recognized; that in itself is already a win.”

Over the past years, several of the company’s industry colleagues have also been nominated for Parnelli Awards. This year is no exception, with Kevin Carswell being nominated for Video Director of the Year for his work, supported by Solotech, on the An Evening with Michael Bublé Tour.

Previously, Solotech has won the Parnelli Award for Video Production Company of the Year in 2019, and was nominated for Best Sound Company of the Year in 2017, having won that Parnelli Award in both 2011 and 2013.

Voting for the 2020 Parnelli Awards is now open to PLSN and FOH subscribers, continuing until December 6, 2019 at 12 pm PT (3pm ET). To vote, visit: https://parnelliawards.com/vote/

Solotech Supplies An L-Acoustics K2 Sound System for Peter Frampton Finale – The Farewell Tour

Nashville, October 28, 2019 – Peter Frampton burst onto pop music’s stage over a half century ago with seminal British blues-rock bands The Herd and Humble Pie, and his 1976 LP, Frampton Comes Alive!, remains one of the best-selling albums of all time. So what was billed as Peter Frampton Finale – The Farewell Tour had to be as perfect as possible, and it was, thanks in large part to an amazing sound system.

Tour sound reinforcement provider Solotech put together the perfect rig for the various venues on the tour, which began on June 18 in Tulsa and ended on October 12 in the San Francisco Bay Area. The left-right hangs consisted of 18 K2 loudspeakers each, backed by eight KS28 subs per side, and flanked by outfill arrays of 18 Kara. Additional sound reinforcement came from eight X8 short throw speakers used as frontfills, and eight ARCS II used as sidefills, either flown or stacked, depending upon each venue’s requirements. Two dozen LA12X amplified controllers housed in eight LA-RAK II units powered and processed the primary PA elements, while six LA8 in two LA-RAK handled the supplementary X8 and ARCS II enclosures.
